Project Background

The Mengbishan Tunnel is a special long tunnel of the Zhuoxiao Road Project of Provincial Highway 217, with a total length of 3,350 meters. The travel time from Barkam City to Xiaojin County will be shortened from the original 3 and a half hours to 2 hours, which will not only greatly reduce the problem of ice and snow road closures in winter on the original road section and the incidence of traffic accidents.

The Project
The tunnel locates in Barkam, where is 3,800m above the sea level. It is an alpine, high-altitude region, average temperature in winter between -2.0℃ - 13.0℃. The tunnel gate is faced with the problem of snow accumulation and icy road due to big temperature difference in winter.

The Challenge
The geographical condition is complicated. Consists of carbonaceous slate, carbonaceous phyllite intercalated with metamorphic sandstone, it is difficult in engineering construction.

The Solution
SLP adapts shed system consists of steel structure arch, sidestay and snow endurance board on this project. It can effectively prevent snowdrift and snow accumulation at the tunnel gate, as well as reduce road freezing by adjusting the temperature difference in and out the tunnel in winter. It also brings down cost of manual maintenance for road clean and deicing. Lightweight structure with low dead load can avoid large excavation and backfilling, and have less impact on the ecological environment. The use of snow endurance board with clear vision provides good lighting and ventilation effects, and multiple color option will be integrated with nature to form a good landscape.
